About

Alloprof is a Quebec-based charitable organization pursuing the mission of combating school dropout rates and increasing youth motivation in school by providing free homework help services.

The Challenge

The project to redesign the website face significant challenges, including:

  • Personalizing the user experience for students of varying educational levels,

  • Simplifying the platform's structure and language,

  • Integrating Artificial Intelligence for content recommendations,

  • Enhancing engagement with interactive features.

Additionally, the platform aimed to support parents in their role as positive educational influencers. These challenges required a strategic approach to overhaul the platform comprehensively while addressing the diverse needs of users.

We hosted meetings with key stakeholders, including Alloprof employees, program-creating teachers, call center teachers, and parents, to map out stakeholders, users, and interactions. This helped identify valuable human-human, human-machine, and machine-machine relationships and interactions.

We established a common language and identified main stakeholders and their motivations. Surveys and interviews helped determine audience objectives, motivations, frustrations, and visions of success, providing a reference document for the project.

Identifying project priorities

Through brainstorming sessions and discussions with experts, we identified various scenarios for expansion using a blend of task mapping and high-level zoning. This approach helped us pinpoint opportunity touchpoints and areas where the overall experience could be enhanced through personalized content and engagement strategies.

This phase of the project encompassed:

  • Design thinking meetings with clients and stakeholders

  • Content audit

  • Creation of a sitemap

  • User journeys + High-level Zoning

Each of these steps allowed us to anticipate potential friction points and begin brainstorming solutions to enhance the user experience. It also helped identify specific scenarios that we deemed important to test with users.

After conducting a thorough content audit of the site, I developed a sitemap to establish the main landing page and provide a structured framework for programmers.

User journey maps enabled us to comprehensively plan scenarios and account for outliers related to the most critical user actions.

User journey maps also helped us identify areas where the experience could be enhanced for children, particularly in stressful situations when seeking homework support.

Wireframing and Testing

Recognizing that users often experience stress while seeking content, our primary goal was to develop a platform tailored to their unique studying/research style, making the experience more enjoyable. Guided by this North Star, we proceeded to:

  • Test wireframes using a prototype directly with elementary school students.

  • Use this date to design a more intuitive research experience.

  • Optimize the website’s navigation.

  • Integrate a personalized "assistant" for added fun and personalization throughout the platform.

Search page

Utilizing AI, our search tool delivers highly relevant results to students based on their profile (age, grade level, and previous searches). Results are categorized by content type, allowing students to easily find their preferred content format.

Solutions for navigating the expansive content catalogue

Educational materials were often lengthy and challenging to navigate. A single page contained information for multiple schooling levels, requiring users to scroll extensively to find relevant information.

The Solution:

  • Implemented a navigation system hidden during reading mode yet easily accessible through user navigation.

  • Utilized personalization with the assistant Flo to tailor information discovery based on individual preferences.

In-Page Navigation & Personalization

Flo, our Alloprof avatar, acted as the initial point of contact for students seeking content. By asking a few questions and gauging their responses, we directed them to relevant areas of the site tailored to their school year.
